On the following pages you will
find a listing of my entire newspaper collection. This list is updated as
I acquire additional newspapers. I started collecting newspapers in 1963
and in the forty years time that has elapsed I have acquired many of
historic significance and value. I have endeavored to preserve these
papers to the best of my ability. Each one is enclosed unfolded and flat
in a chemically inert, archival quality polyethylene bag. The bag has been
stapled to blue poster board so that it may be picked up without damaging
the edges of the paper. The papers are then stored in a large walk-in
closet in a third floor attic where the temperature and humidity are
relatively constant; being cool and dry. The newspapers have no exposure
to the sun or other sources of light. Approximately 90% of the newspapers
are complete. The remaining 10% are first sections only or perhaps the
first two sections. None are just the front page. Each newspaper is
important to me as all have, or will have, some historical significance as
time progresses. Collectors will recognize some of the papers as being
monetarily valuable. Newspapers such as the September 3, 1666 London
Gazette about the Great London Fire, the April 10, 1865 New York Times on
the Victory of the Union Army, the October 10, 1871 Indiana Evening News
on the Desolation of Chicago, the April 19, 1906 Call-Chronicle-Examiner;
Earthquake and Fire, San Francisco In Ruins, the Chicago Daily Tribune of
November 3, 1948 with the Dewey Defeats Truman headline are all valued in
the hundreds of dollars. My purpose, though, in collecting newspapers has
never been one of monetary gain or importance. I collect newspapers
because I love history and wish to preserve, in my small way, these ‘first
drafts of history.’ If you have any questions or, perhaps, a newspaper you
think I may be interested in, you are welcome to e-mail me. Thank you for
visiting my site. I hope you enjoy your visit and come back often as I add
additional pages and information. M.S.B.
